SERVICES: Remote CART

Remote CART is also known as remote real-time captioning.

CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation) is a process of converting the spoken word into text through a third party, such as a trained operator using a stenographic machine to transcribe speech into written text and transmitting it onto a device to be used as a communication access vehicle.

Remote CART provides the same services and utility as onsite CART in that the provider creates in real-time a verbatim transcription of the spoken work which appears on the consumer’s computer screen or projection screen. However, instead of needing to be physically present in the room where the event is taking place the CART provider listens to the event using Voice Over IP (VoIP) Technology at a remote location.

Advantages to remote CART include:

Agency is able to cover more classes then on-site captioner.
Saturday and evening classes are easily covered with Remote CART.
Instant edited notes are available to student immediately after class.
Student feels independent and free from being a distraction to class.

Sample Policies and Procedures for Remote Cart in the Classroom:

All equipment, including but not limited to: Hardwire internet cable, microphone and software provided by
One Stop Verbatim Services. (Please note: WiFi is not recommended with Remote.)

Step-by-step instructions on how to use our Remote CART method for students and the university; appointment is necessary; please call in advance.

The captioner waits on-line one half hour for every hour of class time for student to log on and call in. If the student is a “No-Show” after this time period, client will be billed in full for class time scheduled.

DSS Department may consider a “Check-Out Process” of Department’s laptop from DSS Office or allowing student to keep laptop with him/her for entire quarter. An alternative to this would be for the student to provide their own laptop.

If DSS Department uses a rental laptop from One Stop Verbatim Services, a “Check-Out Process” with DSS Department is essential.

A 24-hour notice from scheduled class time is recommended for all class cancellations. (Client will be billed in full for anything less then 24 hours.)
